CHAPTER XII. Clotilde announced that she would not be back and she was taking Fritz and Anna forever. A bobbing lantern, crossing the bridge—for she had not drawn the curtain—attracted her attention. She had been married four times: three of her husbands died of hempen fevers; and the fourth, having been twice condemned, was saved from the noose by Jonathan Wild, who not only managed to bring him off, but to obtain for him the situation of under-turnkey in Newgate. The place, in which they stood, was a small entrance-chamber, cut off, like the segment of a circle, from the main apartment, (of which it is needless to say it originally constituted a portion,) by a stout wooden partition.
